Elopements in the West of Colorado are the BEST!

🤫 But, shhhhhh, don’t tell everyone, it’s our little secret.

Colorado is a HUGE elopement destination, people travel from all over the US to elope here. And no wonder: with its wild mountain ranges and epic scenery, Colorado is a SPECTACULAR location to share your vows.

However, the most popular spots are starting to get a little crowded: it can be hard to find a degree of privacy on your elopement day.

Fortunately for you, we know where those spots are..... Aaaaaaaaaand how to avoid them!

Our first piece of advice is always going to be: GO WEST!

Most visitors to Colorado don’t stray too far beyond Denver. So, places like Rocky Mountain National Park are MOBBED by tourists.

However, if you venture out to the west of the state, you leave the crowds behind. AND, in our honest opinion, it’s even MORE beautiful over this way. The San Juan mountains are insanely rugged and beautiful. Plus, there’s no end of sweet, quirky little mountain towns to stay in. Google the likes of Ouray and Telluride to see what we mean!

Sarah and Bobby’s stunning sunset Adventure Sess Sarah and Bobby’s stunning sunset Adventure Session!

Oh my goodness, poor Sarah and Bobby worked HARD to join us in Arches National Park for their adventure session.

On the drive to Moab, their car broke down completely - kaput, not going any further in the middle of remote Utah - and we had to delay their session by a day so a lovely mechanic could get them back on the road.

THEN, the next day as we were waiting for them in Arches, we got a phone call that they were close by but had a FLAT TYRE!!! What the?! 🤣

We hopped in our car and went to meet them and change the tyre out for them (nooooo way were we letting them do that in wedding clothes!).

We always build buffer time into our timelines, so no stress, we were still on track. Thinking we were all set to go, we drove out to our starting point together.

The plan was to hike maybe a mile round trip for some killer sunset photos....

BUT at this stage, Bobby - who has T1 Diabetes - let us know that his glucose levels were noooooooot happy (no wonder with all the stress!) and that he didn’t feel confident venturing too far from the car. 100% the right choice, and so we went into pivot mode!

Now getting a little short on time, we quickly brainstormed some new options on the fly.

And, you know what? It worked out FANTASTICALLY!

Shooting at entirely new locations forced us to really look around us, see what the light was doing, what might make for a nice compositions etc. and encouraged some really fresh creativity!

Sarah and Bobby, you were champions, choosing to laugh your way through the misfortunes and focus on your love and making memories instead!

Of course you can still include wedding traditions Of course you can still include wedding traditions in your elopement!

Many couples feel torn between having a big wedding or an elopement.

One of their fears is that, by choosing to elope, they will have to ditch all the traditional elements typical of a big wedding. And, well, that makes them feel kinda sad.

No walk down the aisle.

No first dance.

No cake.

No father/daughter dance.

HOLD UP! That’s just not true....

We want you to know you can ABSOLUTELY have all of those things, if you want to. And if you don’t want to, well that’s totally cool, too.

That’s, like, the whole darned point of eloping!!!

Elopements are all about CHOICE. You embracing your freedom and the right to decide exactly what your wedding day looks like.

You get to ditch the elements that don’t make sense to you and totally embrace the ones that do.

Want a cake? Have a damned cake.

Would you prefer personal vows over traditional ones? Beautiful.

You can even adapt a standard traditional element to suit your own needs.

For example, if a father/daughter dance doesn’t suit your personal family dynamic but a dance with your sibling or mom does, then DO IT!

Or maybe you’d like your kiddo to walk you down the aisle?

Heck, go ahead and make your OWN traditions: maybe you’d like to enjoy a picnic and fine whisky every year on your anniversary? Or get out camping and reconnect in nature?

This is your day, your way. And, whatever you choose, we’re here to support you!

Let’s talk Zion elopements! The Zion Nati Let’s talk Zion elopements!

The Zion National Park area is STUNNING and makes for one heck of an elopement location.

However, it is one of the US’s most popular national parks (with good reason!) and can get VERY overcrowded.

If a degree of privacy is important to you on your elopement day, here’s our top advice for avoiding the crowds....

⏰ Be prepared to get up EARLY! Most tourists get up, have breakfast, get everyone organized and THEN head on out to explore. So, if you can get up and out in time for sunrise there’s going to be a tiny fraction of the people around. Plus, sunrise weddings are so darned romantic, it’s always worth the effort!

❄️ Go in the off-season. Spring through fall is gonna be packed, no two ways around that. If you don’t mind braving the cold a little, winter in Zion is truly special: it’s so peaceful, and you might even get a sprinkling of snow over those red rocks which looks amaaaaazing in photos!

✅ Find the Instagram hotspots.... And then go elsewhere! Seriously, 9/10 tourists will go to the same 2-3 spots they’ve heard of through social media when, in reality, the area is HUGE and has 100s of beautiful spots to take photos.

🥾 Be prepared to hike a little! If you are able to hike even a mile or two, you’ll find yourself escaping 50% of the crowds already! If you’re able to do a few miles AND get up for sunrise, it’s not impossible to have a beautiful lookout all to yourselves!

⭐ We’re going to be in Zion in June and have room for ONE more elopement. If you’re open to sunrise and a bit of a hike, drop us a message to claim that last spot! ⭐

Q: How long should I book my elopement photographe Q: How long should I book my elopement photographer for?

A: At least a week and we should all go hiking, off-roading, hop on a helicopter, maybe even explore another country....

Kidding (kinda)!

The point is, though, we deeply care about your elopement experience and want you to have the most insanely incredible time.

That’s why we personally don’t offer ‘just a quick hour or two’ elopements. We’d be doing you a disservice when it’s just not what we believe in.

We believe in embracing every last minute that your elopement day has to offer.

There’s no solid answer to exactly how long you should book us for - it does vary from couple to couple, depending on how you want to spend your day - but we will tell you, full transparency here, that 80-90% of our couples book us for a full day.

That means:

❤️ They can soak in both sunrise AND sunset if they want to.

❤️ They don’t have to pick and choose which bits to have covered.

❤️ They can pace things nice and easy, no need to cram things into a few hours.

❤️ They can still have a super-full experience even if the unexpected - weather, road closures etc - happens.

If you already eloped with us and booked a full-day experience, tell us your honest thoughts about it in the comments!
